Romanticism flourished in England and on the continent during Schleirmachers' time. In fact, during his lifetime, it reached the zenith of its power in England, France and Germany. It represented a growing reaction against the authority of conventions, cold classicism, the repression of aspiration and the dominance of church and state. It was greatly aided by the French Revolution which began in 1789.
