Revitalizing community through dance
This thesis will examine the ability of dance and art programs to contribute to revitalization activities of a community. The development of revitalization strategies, along with progress in the field of arts education, gave rise to the use of dance as a tool for community development. This thesis discusses the inclusion of dance at all levels of community interaction. It begins with an overview of the history of revitalization and a sample of strategies used for neighborhood improvements. It then provides a theoretical basis for arts education and illustrates a "renaissance" of arts on a national agenda and stimulation of economic growth. The emergence of community dance programs is shown with examples of exceptional models. Three significant community projects directed by the author are sited to discuss the process and product, points of interaction, impact and benefits to community, and an analysis of each dance program. The final chapter provides a recommended revitalization plan for Joe's Movement Emporium and its neighborhood of Mount Rainier, Maryland.
