For many years the idea that a low-producing dairy cow is one that is unable to eat sufficient food nutrients to ensure a fair production; or, in other words, that her production is limited by her inability to consume a sufficient amount of food nutrients. It has also been thought that high-producing cows are high producers because they can consume more food than cows of lesser production. Another prevailing idea is that when butterfat production goes above a certain amount, the economy of this higher production is not so great. This study is undertaken to determine the relation between the producing capacity of cows and their ability to consume food, and to study the factors which influence such a problem.
