In some ways, it is disheartening to me to think this collection of poetry and prose represents what I have learned during my two years of graduate study at The American University, yet it does. I had hoped that, by now, I would be much further advanced than I am. Nevertheless, there has been progress; new doors have been opened. When I came to American, I wrote only fiction, but after enrolling in Henry Taylor's poetry workshop, I decided I wanted to write both fiction and poetry. Now, for better or worse, I do, and will continue to do so. I believe that each form has aided the other, and though I still have a long way to go in both, I do not think a fair representation of myself as a writer could be made by excluding either.
