The purpose of this study is to make an analysis of the recent functional decentralization of the Bureau of Mines. It is intended to show the nature and extent of the Bureau's activities; methods of coordination of the Bureau's activities with those of other agencies; the development of decentralization the the years; the process of the recent decentralization of the Bureau; problems that grew out of decentralization, and how these problems were handled; and the organizational pattern of the Bureau after it was decentralized, including the role of the Washington Office; and patters of decentralization within the Department of the Interior, for comparison with the Bureau of Mines.
