Pictures of New England Life from the Writings of Harriet Beecher Stowe

Although the early life of Harriet and Calvin form the most important sources of the New England writings both returned to New England. While they were living in Cincinnati there were visits to Connecticut. At different times both Mrs. Stowe and her husband went to a certain Dr. Wessellhoff's Water Cure at Brattleboro, Vermont. In 1850 they returned to New England to live. Professor Stowe had accepted a professorship at Bowdoin and circumstances made it necessary for Mrs. Stowe to come east with the children and settle affairs alone. Here she had good opportunity to make use of the quality of "faculty" which she bestowed upon all of her New England heroines.It is the purpose of this thesis to demonstrate how accurately Mrs. Stowe has pictured life in New England during the early nineteenth century. History has recorded the events of note which formed New England's part in the national development, Mrs. Stowe has given the intimate details of home and religious life which form the social background of the lives of the actors in the events.
