This work is intended to show the historical development of law in the Philippines during the American occupation as the two legal systems, civil and Anglo-American, were blended, and incidentally to show the profound influence of the latter on the former mainly by legislation. To sufficiently portray this process, it has been found necessary to give a preliminary survey of the conditions in the Islands immediately preceding the arrival of the Americans. The first portion of this treatise has therefore been devoted to a brief description of the conditions in the Archipelago while under the Spanish sway.
