Parental guidance
A collection of five short fiction stories, Parental Guidance explores that moment when we begin to crossover from childhood but have not yet entered young adulthood, otherwise known as the “tween” years. I understand this stage of life as being filled with several uncertainties about oneself and the world. In this collection, I focused on child-parent relationships and how those relationships begin to shift as one gets closer to their teen years. Teenage years are often defined by how one separates from their parents, so I wanted to capture the point just before that separation happens. These stories all feature a child who is just starting to recognize the complexities of their relationship with their parents. Several of these stories are inspired by events in my life and my experiences growing up. I also took inspiration from the middle-grade novel and children’s television shows I enjoyed during my tween years.
