Nationalism is one of broadest and most relevant themes in social science today. The two prevailing theories today are ethno-symbolism and modernism. Using the period shortly following the revolution in Iran, this study seeks to test both theories in an especially interesting and turbulent environment. Analysis of history, discourse, and key personalities all bolster the notion that nationalism is a fundamentally modern phenomenon, although ethno-symbolism has some utility in highlighting how the building blocks that become nations come together.
