This is a work of fiction about a mother and her son. When Miriam Birkin comes out as a lesbian, she loses custody of her three year old to her ex-husband. The novel illustrates her difficulty coming to terms with her loss, her immersion in different systems that attempt to define her as deviant or "other"---judicial and child welfare systems, for example---and her gradual acceptance of her condition. When it is discovered that her ex-husband is a pedophile, Adrian is returned to live with her full time, but, at twelve years old, he is very different from the boy she once knew.
