An emphasis on public health programs shifts from the more acute diseases to the long term disabling illnesses, many of the tenets long held in measuring and describing the social patterns of disease need to be re-examined. The suitability of various commonly used measures in describing the relationship between one of the chronic diseases, tuberculosis, and economic status is tested in this thesis.
