Third parties have appeared with startling frequency on the American political scene. Stimulated in large part by economic, political, or social discontent, they have often been able to compete favorably with older parties for mass support in local and national elections. Through their electoral and educational efforts, new party movements have repeatedly made estimable contributions to the formulation and administration of public policy.
