Motherland is an original novel that explores the complexity of identity and loss through the eyes of a young woman who emigrates from Ireland to America in 1960. Fiona McGovern is seventeen when she reluctantly leaves her boyfriend behind in County Leitrim and moves to New York City, carrying with her the secret of her unexpected pregnancy. The novel examines the challenges in negotiating cultural stigmas surrounding unwed mothers and family expectations as Fiona discovers her own identity as a woman.
