Research in the field of psychoneuroimmunology has demonstrated that psychological variables such as stress and depression predict changes in various immune functions. This has potentially important implications for work with persons infected with HIV. Various negative mood variables and absolute T4 counts were measured in a test-retest design. Neither changes in mood nor mood at initial testing significantly predicted T4 counts. Measures of goal attainability were also taken. These were found to correlate with both concurrent and subsequent measures of negative mood.
