Distinguished in her own day as a poet, propagandist and historian of the American Revolution, Mercy Otis Warren remains a distinct, if lesser-known figure, in American letters. References to her are numerous enough in works on history and literature to stimulate interest in her identity and influence, but except for Alice Brown's brief biography, there is no adequate life of this woman of the Revolution and its first native-born historian.
