These three novellas serve as an exploration of the eternal themes of love and happiness. They question the effects families have on children, and the effects childhood has on the adult. All three novellas approach what the philosopher Karl Jaspers called the "boundary situation:" the specific moment when a person becomes defined by their decisions. Whether through a grave choice of morals as in "And Like That..." or through a threatened confrontation with death as in "The Cher Stories," the characters in these three novellas all come to confront the specific, unexpected time and place that ultimately defines their lives.
