Most of the labor force engaged in farming is self-employed, largely as operators and family workers on family farms. The number of hired farm workers is of secondary importance numerically as compared to this group. In this study, sharecroppers and members of their immediate family are included in the family worker classification. The exact status of sharecroppers is somewhat difficult to determine since their income is derived from a share of the crop they produce, rather than from wage payments.
