The practice of installing, configuring, and maintaining computer systems is known as system administration. While systems administration has been practiced as long as computers have existed, general literature documenting good systems administration practices has only recently been published. System owners have little insight into the quality of systems administration practices. Existing measurement methods address the outcome but not the activities that produce the outcome. This paper demonstrates a way to measure the quality of systems administration practices according to the recent work on the subject by using a measurement model to evaluate systems administration behavior.
