Mathematics in College Entrance and College Graduation Requirements
The following study is based on a survey of the requirements for the bachelor's degree in 101 privately controlled universities and colleges.Data and Method - The fundamental data has been gathered from the university and college catalogues for the year 1926. In addition to the catalogue data, questionaires were sent to the colleges offering a Major and Minor, for the purpose of checking this information. All information regarding the public institutions is taken from a survey made by W. C. Myers. In this study tables and graphs have been prepared which give in full the status of Mathematics in relation to college entrance and graduation requirements. The list of institutions upon which this study is based was suggested by the United States Bureau of Education Each division or chapter contains two tables, the first gives a survey of the total requirements, number of units required for entrance, or the number of semester hours for graduation required in Mathematics; and the second shows the modal tendency in Mathematics, also the minimum, maximum, and median requirements. The negative instances are not included in determining the mode.Purpose - It is the purpose of this study to show the tendencies of both entrance and graduation requirements in the 101 universities and colleges which compose our list. Also, it is intended to make a comparison of the survey of the private institutions, with that of the public institutions as given in the study by Myers, The same method of treatment is given in the separate colleges, i.e., Liberal Arts, both degrees (Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Science), and in the colleges of Engineering, Education, Commerce and Agriculture.
