Since its renaissance in the closing decades of the 19th Century, Imperialism has been the subject of much scholarly and popular attention. In fact, Imperialism has been so thoroughly studied that it claims an imposing bibliography ranking with those of other broad aspects of European history such as the Enlightenment, Nationalism, Liberalism, and Socialism. From this bibliography and filtering down through the textbook level and eventually reaching the popular consciousness has come a set of stereotypes regarding the nature and meaning of Imperialism.
