LIKE WATER POURED OUT: PORTRAITS OF SACRIFICE, STRUGGLE, AND SERVICE IN THE KINGSTON SLUMS
LIKE WATER POURED OUT is an original work of narrative nonfiction by Patrick Marion Bradley. Presented in vignette chapters, the piece follows the daily lives and struggles of monks and nuns in the Missionaries of the Poor--a Catholic order of brothers and sisters from around the world dedicated to caring for the poor, elderly, orphaned, disabled, and ill in the violent slums of Kingston, Jamaica. At the narrative's center lies Brother Augusto Silot, the order's new leader, who grapples with the responsibilities of an organization constantly facing limited resources and endless need. In highlighting this group of people who have left their families and committed their lives to strangers, the manuscript poses profound questions about what love and sacrifice mean in an age of consumerism and individuality.
