Kavannah is a collection of poetry and prose in four parts: two sections of prose, and two sections of poetry. The first section of prose and the first section of poetry both explore the ways in which children respond to what they fear or cannot control, and the superstitions children invent to deal with the complex world around them. These sections also explore family relationships. The second section of prose and the second section of poetry continue to explore the individual's relationship with and perceptions of the world, herself, and others, but these sections are more concerned with the physical self and with adult sensibilities.
