The object of this paper is to give as complete a picture as possible of the situation in Italy between 1853 and 1861, especially of the Crimean War, the Austrian War, and Garibaldi's Campaigns, as seen through John M. Daniel's own eyes. So with the exception of a brief chapter devoted to giving an outline of the period and one attempting to convey some idea of the man who writes these interesting dispatches, the paper is given over to Mr. Daniel's own account in his own words. The writer has attempted merely to furnish connecting links and perhaps to interpret Daniel ever so slightly.
