Isabella Charity, Tommy and Finch are the three characters that tell the story of 13-year-old Isabella Charity's struggle with the world from which she feels isolated. She loves her 18-year-old brother, Tommy, but knows he must leave to pursue his ice hockey career. Fearing she will end up like her alcoholic mother, Isabella Charity feels both drawn to and repulsed by the idea of a "normal" family life. She craves a home so badly that she searches for it in an old rock fort and a dilapidated clubhouse, but rejects her mother's attempts to build a closer relationship. The books Isabella Charity reads offer her worlds where lives have structure and problems have resolutions.
