This thesis focuses on performing arts in visual art museums and the motivation driving such activities. The goal is to determine why visual art museums provide performing arts programming. The question at the core of this paper is: Is Intradisciplinality in Visual Art Museums Inspired through Mission or as an Audience Development Venture? There were three visual art museums used as case studies for research: Seattle Art Museum, Saint Louis Art Museum, and Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine. The researched showed that in order to create relevant programming and remain financially stable, museums must engage in both mission-inspired and audience development programming.
