This thesis is an analysis of the four internal factors of mission, leadership, board of directors, and financial resources which contribute to nonprofit performing arts organization failure. Through examination of the two case studies--The Los Angeles Theater Center and The New School for Performing Arts--it was discovered that, in both cases, all factors were dysfunctional and played an important part in the organization's failure. The Free Southern Theatre is included because it voluntarily closed, an option not often taken by failing organizations. Information was obtained through taped oral interviews, books, and articles in newspapers and periodicals.
