Of all the systems engineering design functions, interface management is one of the least studied. The literature review conducted for the thesis proved this point. Current research is needed to identify, evaluate, and define the interface management requirements for today's complex hardware and software systems. Research was performed by conducting multiple-case studies. Both hardware and software interfaces throughout the system life cycle were considered. The research also examined the multiple-contractor and in-house design environments. The research identified four key interface management requirements that must be present for a successful interface management program. In addition to the four key requirements, a comprehensive list of 49 interface management requirements were identified and evaluated. From the results and analysis of the individual case data an optimum set of interface management requirements was defined. Sufficient information is provided to derive or improve a program.
