The present experiment was an attempt to find an answer to the following questions - To what extent is recall influenced by narcosis,and, under a different set of conditions does the narcosis exert a stronger influence under recall than under learning?The subject matter which is to be learned ought to be one which offers a fair test of memorization. Nonsense syllables have the advantages of simplicity in construction and uniformity in length but it was believed that a more naturally constructed word list could be selected from one of the living languages. Such a word list would not have the advantages of uniformity of word size but it would avoid the use of artificial constructions. The subject has studied several languages and felt interested in performing that kind of memory tes.
