The present experiment was an attempt to find an answer to the following questions - To what extent is recall influenced by narcosis,and, under a different set of conditions does the narcosis exert a stronger influence under recall than under learning?The subject matter which is to be learned ought to be one which offers a fair test of memorization. Nonsense syllables have the advantages of simplicity in construction and uniformity in length but it was believed that a more naturally constructed word list could be selected from one of the living languages. Such a word list would not have the advantages of uniformity of word size but it would avoid the use of artificial constructions.
