After the two invasions by Japan in 1592 and by Manchu in 1627, Korea remained in almost complete isolation except for relations with China until late in the nineteenth century.In the latter part of the nineteenth century, however, Japan began to show increasing interest in the Korean peninsula and forced Korea to sign a modern commercial treaty in 1876 and to open ports for trade.
