Industrialization of Syria

Syria is now facing a problem of industrialization as part of its peoples' endeavor to raise their standard of living and to obtain a better economic structure. The economic factors playing a major role in a program of industrialization include:Population, as the source of labor and the indicator of the size of the domestic market.Land conditions, as the source of raw material for Syrian industries.Transportation, as the means for facilitating the flow of goods, thereby assisting the growth of industries.Foreign trade and balance of payment, as factors reflecting the economic conditions of the country.As a clarifying background, there follows a brief survey of the evolution of Syrian industries since shortly before World War I.
