In a Grove of Trees Called Ash Woods
This collection of original poetry is divided into four sections: "Mulatto," "Guardian Life," "Second Chances," and "Godson." "Mulatto" explores in personal ways complex issues of race in America through the experience of the author--"Colored and White ... half-Black, half-White." As well as the unexpected love for and reconciliation with the author's father as when she writes--"My reflection catches inside my father's/mirror, released to seek/peace and pursue it." The elegiac section, "Guardian Life," explores death and denial, as well as acceptance of the life's fullness. The third section, "Second Chances," illuminates moments in the author's lifetime when a chance for grace has been realized. In the fourth section, "Godson" celebrates the author's own Godson--"I can't stop singing and you are my song.".
