This thesis examines the problems with and benefits of hybrid intelligent systems. Three disparate fields of artificial intelligence are focused on: expert systems, fuzzy logic, and neural networks. These areas are explained and their benefits and disadvantages are explored. Also, the dynamics of the integration of these areas are analyzed. This analysis includes explanations of how some disadvantages of these areas of artificial intelligence are overcome by some of the advantages of the other areas. The process of integration is further explored through the actual designing, coding and implementation of a hybrid intelligent system that has been constructed as part of this thesis.
