This thesis is a collection of five long stories which dramatize the complex effects of impermanence and betrayal on ordinary people. Two of the stories are set in South Florida, two in Mamaroneck--a suburb of New York City, in Westchester County--and one in and around Washington, D.C. All of the stories focus primarily on the shifting and enduring affections, loyalties, perspectives, and tensions among members of middle-class American Jewish families, and those families' often painful and flawed attempts to come to terms with personal grief and the burden of memory.
