It is the purpose of this dissertation to show the general view of the development of education in Korea from the earliest time of its history down to the end of the Lee dynasty when Japan annexed this state in 1910. Special effort has been made to trace the forces and influences that have made the Korean educational system what it was just before the loss of Korean independence. Attention has been directed also to some of the attitudes, trends, and facts which at certain periods seem of paramount importance to Korean education. Within the limits of this study it is impossible to deal with all of the educational agencies that existed throughout these periods. Mush valuable and interesting work has therefore been passed over with a word.
