Human existence hinges on consumption. Destruction, even. Hammerhead asks, “How can we make peace with our living, if to exist is—in many ways—to mar?” This collection meditates on nature and climate change, animals and industrialized farming, legacy and layered histories. Poems smooth their palms over Mother Nature’s scars, calling attention to the marks people leave behind. Still, the collection contends, there is beauty in this wreckage. There is splendor in life’s chance existence on this masterfully carved rock planet, rolling around the sun. To survive, we must make ourselves known to this Earth. We must take: eat, buy, participate. But we can proceed with gentler steps and pause to take stock of all we move through. This text oscillates between destruction and reclamation, advocating for radical interconnectedness.
