Government and Administration in the New India

Early India. On January 26, 1950 editorial writers throughout the free world hailed the entrance of the sovereign state of India, or Bharat, into the family of independent nations. However, few of the welcoming messages noted the fact that the Indian people had once enjoyed a semblance of democratic institutions. Long before the birth of Christ the rulers' authority was limited in certain areas of the country. IN some instances this type of government antedated the better known institutions of ancient Greece or Rome.
