Four models of success: Viewpoints on the economic survival of Black theater
The business strategies used by Black theaters to maintain the operation of their organizations are examined through studies of the Kuumba Theater (Chicago, IL), Jomandi Theater (Atlanta, GA), Freedom Theater (Philadelphia, PA), and the Crossroads Theater (New Brunswick, NJ). These region theaters, located in metropolitan areas with large African-American populations, may vary in size, staffing and management procedures; but are similar in their efforts to heighten awareness of African-American life experiences through the medium of theater. This thesis highlights the founding, background and methods of operation for each theater. The study also examines some dilemmas that face managers of black theaters and cites viewpoints on the future economic stability of these Black theater organizations. Conclusions are based on written materials and interviews with the founders/mangers and selected theater specialists.
