Family factors associated with treatment adherence and management behaviors in youth with type 1 diabetes
Background. Type 1 diabetes is a chronic childhood condition the management of which is multi-faceted and often difficult for youth. Previous research regarding which family factors significantly influence diabetes management behaviors has been inconsistent. Current Research. This study examined a proposed mediational model, which hypothesized that parenting style and family organization were indirectly related to youth HbA1C and parent and child reported out of range BG check percentages. It was hypothesized that this relationship was mediated by youth self-efficacy for diabetes and hypoglycemic fears. Results. Statistical support for the proposed mediational model was not found. Family organization was significantly related to youth self-efficacy, hypoglycemic fears, and parent-reported percentage of out of range BG checks. Conclusion. Family organization, more so than type of parenting style, appears to play an important role in the management of Type 1 diabetes in adolescents.
