A great belt of industrial activity lies adjacent to a long stretch of the Atlantic seaboard. It originates in New England which saw a new era of manufacturing begin at the same time that this country was created as a new nation. It spreads across most of the highly urbanized northeast and middle Atlantic states. It crosses the Mason and Dixon line and pushes a finger into Maryland. Major manufacturing areas as defined by the United States Bureau of the Census form an almost continuous band along this rich industrial region.
