Factor structure of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index and its relationship to ataques de nervios among island Puerto Ricans
Objectives were to (a) examine the factor structure of the ASI among island Puerto Ricans, (b) determine whether acculturation influences AS, and (c) investigate the relationship between AS and ataques de nervios (ADN). CFA results comparing our data to factor solutions of European American and Spanish populations indicated a poor fit. An EFA indicated a 2-factor solution (Factor 1 AS; Factor 2 Emotional Concerns) provided the best fit. Moderately high correlations between the ASI and anxiety measures indicated convergent validity, while significantly lower correlations between the ASI and BDI demonstrated discriminant validity. All scores were positively correlated with acculturation suggesting traditional Hispanic culture is associated with elevated anxiety and depression. Finally, the sample was divided into those with ADN, versus those high on AS (HAS) and low on AS (LAS) without ADN. ADN participants scored lower on measures of anxiety and depression than HAS, but significantly higher than LAS.
