Steel capacity and production are basic to modern industrial activity. Steel accounted for 85%, tonnage wise, of all the processed materials used in manufacturing in the United States in recent years. Because of its importance in economic life, the policies of the steel industry in all phases of its operations have far reaching effect on the national economy. The rise of the nation's steel capacity is one of the keys, on an overall basis, to national economic policies, and, on an industry basis, to the levels of operation in the west network of steel consuming industries.
