East-West Economic Pressures on the Burmese Economy, 1949-1954

Southeast Asia, once the golden pawn of empires and now a battleground in the East-West struggle, represents the largest massing of newly-independent nations. Of the countries comprising this geographical area, only Thailand has known continued independence for more than a century and even she knew occupation and domination by Japan during World War II.
