Early ought's
Early Oughts, a book-length poem, is an account of the trauma of growing up in the hyper-conservative, carceral culture of early 2000s America, while the speaker, at the same time, assumes accountability for her own actions in those years. Written from a trans femme perspective, Early Oughts draws inspiration from lyrical memoir, found poetry, pop culture, and experimental forms to examine the notion of “the end of history” as posited by Francis Fukuyama. Past, present, and future intermingle in this book, forcing confrontations between events and their consequences on the culture and individuals. At the center of the book is the speaker’s quest to understand and practice accountability that reduces harm for herself and others. It is one trans femme’s exploration of what accountability is in a world that does not account for you, a poet’s self-guidance, the map for a life.
