In recent years considerable attention has been given in the United States to the study of explosions of dust in manufacturing establishments. The work covered in this thesis embraces a study of the causes of these explosions and of the progress made in the development and application of methods of control and prevention. There are approximately 28,000 industrial plants in the United States that are subject to the dust explosion hazard. These plants employ more than 1,325,000 persons and manufacture products of an annual value in excess of $10,000,000,000 ( ten billions of dollars). The problem is of national economic importance and is concerned directly with the conservation of life and property.
