When would-be kidnapper Cuarto Machacon takes teenager Felicia Espinoza and her brother, Federico, on a road trip up a mountain, even he cannot predict the psychological twists and turns the three will be forced to negotiate. Cuarto, self-described "son of a gambler, brother of a brute," thinks his plan to "kidnap" the two children with their unknowing cooperation will change his life for the better, but the outcome is complicated by his own ambivalence and the reactions of wealthy landowners Alfonso and Rita Espinoza, who have their own motives and family secrets to conceal. The story is told from the perspectives of Cuarto, Felicia, and Federico, resulting in a compelling and complex portrait of their relationship. As the characters will learn, the road leading into oneself is rarely a smooth and predictable one. The mythical Latin American city of Damiana provides the setting for this absorbing tale.
