Since the discovery of penicillin, the development of antibiotics has been one of the major fields of medicine. Especially, bacterial resistance toward drugs is a global problem. Therefore, it is a great importance to design and synthesize new antimicrobial drugs. Production of beta-lactamases is one of the main causes of bacterial resistance. To prevent the bacterial resistance caused by beta-lactamases, beta-lactams, having the potential to act as beta-lactamase inhibitor, has been developed. This project focused on the design and synthesis NO containing beta-lactam, which perform as triple function inhibitors. The triple function is designed not only for inhibiting beta-lactamases, but also for releasing a nitric oxide, which is a toxin because it is expected to bind to the target enzyme. In the synthesis of these beta-lactams, microwave irradiation was used, which resulted in a high yield of imine. This resulted in obtaining clean beta-lactams in a very good yield.
