Defect and Dysphoria is an original collection of ten stories that concern various forms of modern-day malaise. In these stories, the characters exhibit a deadened, dissatisfied, and disenchanted outlook on American life. In both urban and suburban surroundings, these affected characters often act out, both passively and violently, their emotional responses to a life they imagine as bleak and untenable. However, though the stories are linked through similar characters, each piece is quite different and looks at a variety of dark situations. For example, "Sparks" depicts the world of four alienated adolescents with a penchant for arson, while "Slice of Romanian Skirt" exposes an alcoholic comic book writer who has trouble defining actual love within his chaotic world of addiction.
