Dance education in the state of Delaware
As a small state without a major metropolitan area, Delaware has limited cultural resources. Nevertheless, a set of standards are in place that can provide a framework for integrating dance into the schools. Two thriving arts-oriented schools within the state demonstrate that dedicated parents and educators can mount and maintain effective arts programs in this environment. Using practical implementation plans of the kind outlined in this thesis and given the appropriate administrative support, classroom teachers in Delaware can play a key role in making dance part of the education of every student. This thesis reports the status of dance education in Delaware, assesses its strengths and weaknesses, and presents conclusions as to what steps remain to make dance education integral to the curriculum of the public schools. In closing, the thesis provides sample curricula and in-service dance programs for teachers that could help make broader implementation a reality.
