DEVELOPMENT OF A FLAME RETARDANT, CHITOSAN-CONTAINING, INTUMESCENT POLYMER

thesis
posted on 2023-08-03, 16:08 authored by Anneliese Faustino

The goal of this project was to synthesize a novel, flame-resistant, intumescent polymer that meets or exceeds industry standards in terms of strength, cost, versatility, and biodegradability. Chitosan, an intumescent material, was used to prepare a thermoplastic extruded polymer. Clay or metal salt additives were used to improve charring or viscosity properties. Extruded polymers underwent a wide array of analytical tests including cone calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry to better understand the physical and chemical properties of the materials.
