What is today known as the Communist Coup of February 1948 in Czechoslovakia shocked many people throughout the world because the Czechoslovak Republic was not a totalitarian state by the first democracy--a democracy in the western sense--to be swallowed by the rolling communist tide. Thw orld community realized that communism was not just another ideology to be reckoned with at elections.
